AI news #3:
Anthropic shipped Opus 5 — frontier at half the price

The week in short: Anthropic shipped Claude Opus 5 — nearly the level of the flagship Fable 5, at half the token price. Amazon now requires sellers to flag AI-generated people in product images and has put an AI assistant straight into Manage Products, shoppers picked an AI over a brand’s own site for the first time, and from August 2 the EU requires AI creatives to be labelled. Everything checked against primary sources, twice.

Anthropic shipped Claude Opus 5 — nearly the level of the flagship Fable 5, at half the token price

On Friday, July 24, Anthropic introduced Claude Opus 5, its new flagship model. The headline is not a record but a price: Opus 5 comes right up to the frontier level of the far more expensive Fable 5, and on some agentic tests beats it — at half the price per token. Pricing is unchanged from Opus 4.8: $5 per 1M input and $25 per 1M output tokens. The model is already available in the API, Claude.ai, Claude Code and Cowork.

  • The price did not go up: $5 / $25 per 1M tokens, the same as Opus 4.8. “Half the price” is against Fable 5 ($10 / $50), not against Opus 4.8.
  • On agentic tests it beats Fable 5: Frontier-Bench 43.3% against 33.7%, knowledge work GDPval-AA 1861 against 1747, computer use OSWorld 2.0 at 70.6% against 66.1% — and at roughly a third of the cost.
  • Honestly about the weak spots: on the heaviest coding Opus 5 lands slightly below the peak of Fable 5 and GPT-5.6, and for hard legal and medical work Anthropic still recommends Fable 5.
  • There is an effort switch (low / medium / high, up to xhigh) and a fast mode — you choose between “cheaper and quicker” and “smarter and pricier” yourself.
What it means for a seller: this is a cheap frontier agent. Tokens cost what Opus 4.8 cost, but per task it is smarter and leaner. On top of Helium 10 MCP it pulls live account data — keywords, ads, P&L, stock — and does the analysis, writes listings and builds Amazon automation itself, without wrecking you on API bills.

MCP breaks compatibility today — some connectors will drop out

MCP is Anthropic’s standard for connecting AI agents to outside services: it is what every seller-facing MCP server we covered in earlier issues runs on (Helium 10 and the rest). Today, July 28, the largest revision of the protocol since launch is being finalised — and it breaks backward compatibility.

  • The protocol goes stateless: sessions and the handshake are gone and the housekeeping data rides along with every request, so ordinary network infrastructure can route agent traffic without special handling.
  • MCP Apps arrive: a tool can hand the chat an interactive panel with buttons instead of a wall of text. Long-running operations move into a separate Tasks extension.
  • Sampling, Roots and Logging are deprecated — you get 12 months to move off them.
What it means for a seller: the whole current zoo of seller-facing MCP servers sits on the old spec. After July 28 new servers are not required to work with old clients or the other way round, so some links will keep dropping until vendors migrate. If something you connected to Claude suddenly stops answering, check the protocol version before you go digging through your own settings.

The Gemini 3.5 Pro flagship slips again — Alphabet stock dips

Bloomberg reported that Google is months behind schedule on Gemini 3.5 Pro (it was promised back in June). The model is stalling on coding after a botched training-data update. Alphabet stock fell about 4.4% — the market fears it is falling behind OpenAI and Anthropic.

  • Google’s entire shopping bet — Universal Cart, agentic checkout, AI Mode with purchases — rides on Gemini.
  • With the flagship stalling, the pecking order among agentic storefronts is still unsettled.
What it means for a seller: it is not yet clear whose assistant wins shopping — Google’s, OpenAI’s or Anthropic’s. Which means it is too early to put every egg in one basket and optimise for a single assistant.

Anthropic and Blackstone launch Ode — a Claude rollout squad, aimed at retail

Who is Blackstone? The world’s largest private equity firm: it buys and grows real businesses and real estate with pension and insurance money. Roughly $1.35T under management — more than any rival — and 250+ companies in its portfolio. Together with Anthropic and Hellman & Friedman it launched Ode (a deal of about $1.5B): a separate firm that does not build new models but puts Claude into specific business processes.

  • The model is a landing party: ~100 engineers sit inside the client company and wire Claude into its processes instead of writing endless consulting reports.
  • The idea grew out of Blackstone’s own pain: rolling AI out across its 250+ companies through consultants kept going sideways. The announcement’s conclusion: the bottleneck is not access to a model, it is turning the model into a result.
  • Retail is named outright as a priority industry — and where retail goes, e-commerce follows.
What that looks like in retail: people already do on Claude exactly what Ode will be installing in companies: turning dry specs into product copy (written for SEO and for each marketplace’s rules at once), auto-answering and triaging support tickets, chewing through thousands of reviews in batches to decide what to buy and how to price it, personalising email and the storefront. The signal for a seller: money at the level of Blackstone and Goldman Sachs has taken up AI in retail, which means Claude-based tools will mature fast and work out of the box. These use cases are live already — try them in your own account.

ChatGPT Work lands on the desktop — one app for Chat and Work

OpenAI shipped a desktop update: a global switch between Chat and Work modes, projects inside the app, and cloud Work tasks synced across web, phone and desktop. Work is a GPT-5.6 agent that spends hours assembling finished artefacts — spreadsheets, reports, dashboards — and connects to Slack, Gmail, Drive and Salesforce.

What it means for a seller: you can keep the agent open on the desktop and run the routine through it — P&L, inventory reports, competitor benchmarks, scheduled dashboards. Results sync across devices.

FLUX 3: the model behind product-photo services now makes video with sound

Black Forest Labs is the German lab whose FLUX models sit under most product-photo generators. It has released FLUX 3: a single model trained on images, video, audio and action prediction at once. The video version is in early access by request; the image version follows in the coming weeks.

  • The announcement names e-commerce as a target use case, in the words “keeping the product and its materials consistent in motion”.
  • The model outputs video with sound up to 20 seconds long. Testing partners include Canva, Picsart and Krea.
What it means for a seller: it is exactly the product “drifting” between frames that has kept AI video out of listings so far. If that is genuinely fixed, generating product clips from a single photo becomes usable for listings and ad creatives — and it will show up very soon in the services you already pay for.

Stripe is in talks to buy OpenRouter for about $10B

According to the WSJ, payments giant Stripe is negotiating to buy OpenRouter — the service that acts as a single access point to hundreds of AI models from different companies, a kind of power socket for developers. In May OpenRouter was valued at $1.3B; the talk now is around $10B. In parallel, Stripe has a $53B bid in for PayPal.

  • OpenRouter offers access to 400+ models from 60+ companies (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta) and has around 8M developers.
  • For Stripe this is the second AI acquisition in under a year — model routing plus usage billing in one bundle.
What it means for a seller: Stripe is the payment infrastructure under millions of stores and subscriptions. If the deal closes, whoever processes sellers’ payments will also control access to the models — which speaks directly to the future price of AI features inside checkout, subscriptions and seller tools.

Amazon is shutting down almost the whole Nova line — image and video generators included

Reuters, citing Business Insider: Amazon is winding down most of the flagship Nova models — the top-end Premier and Omni, the Reel video model and the Canvas image generator. Resources are being moved to a new top-tier model, a direct competitor to GPT and Claude, expected to debut at re:Invent later this year.

  • Only three survive: Nova 2 Lite, Nova 2 Sonic (voice) and Nova Forge, the service for building your own models.
  • Canvas and Reel are exactly the models Amazon built its AI photo and video generation for listings and ads on, and the ones a number of seller services run on through Bedrock.
  • It comes shortly after Amazon closed its own AGI lab. The Nova brand is not being buried — the new model may ship under it.
What it means for a seller: if your infographic or listing-video tool is wired to Nova through Bedrock, now is the time to ask the vendor about the migration plan and the fallback model. And assume that by re:Invent the whole AI layer inside Seller Central and Amazon Ads moves to a new engine: familiar prompts and output quality will change, and templates will need reworking.

AI Overviews now appear in 43% of Google searches, AI Mode is up to 279M visits

Similarweb (the web-traffic measurement service) published a fresh breakdown: Google’s AI answer now shows on 43% of queries, against 15% a year ago. Visits to AI Mode — the separate chat mode of search — grew from 126M in June 2025 to 279M in May 2026. Queries got longer and more conversational: Google is turning from a gateway to websites into the endpoint where the answer is given.

  • Links inside AI answers are becoming rare: in May, ChatGPT cited sources on just 6.8% of US queries.
  • Long conversational queries need a different listing and feed structure — built for the whole question, not for a two-word keyword.
What it means for a seller: for brands and their own stores these are the numbers that say it is time to rebuild SEO: a noticeable share of product queries now ends inside the AI answer rather than in a click. The practical takeaway is to invest in the completeness of your feed attributes, because what we optimise for now is a machine, not ten blue links.

Regulation · EUJuly 26, 2026

From August 2 labelling AI creatives is mandatory in the EU — fines up to €15M

Google signed the European code of practice on AI content transparency, and on August 2 Article 50 of the AI Act comes into force. From that day AI content has to be marked twice: machine-readably, with invisible marks such as SynthID and the C2PA standard (provenance data inside the file), and explicitly, with a visible icon no later than the first time a user sees it.

  • The rule covers everything generated or materially altered by AI: watermarks for text longer than 200 tokens, layered marking for images, video and audio.
  • Assets created inside Google Ads tools are marked automatically — but responsibility for the visible label still sits with the advertiser.
What it means for a seller: the second AI-disclosure story of the week, after Amazon’s rule on AI people in photos. If you run ads into Europe and make creatives with a neural net, this is about you, not only about the platforms. In practice: make it a rule never to ship an AI creative without the mark, and check that your design contractors are not stripping metadata on export.

Amazon now makes sellers flag AI-generated people in product images

Amazon sent sellers a notice: if a photo, a video or A+ content contains a photorealistic person generated entirely by a neural net, the image now has to be flagged. The reason is New York State’s synthetic performer law, in force since June 9: $1,000 for a first violation and $5,000 for each one after that.

How it is done in practice: the mark is the keyword contains-synthetic-performer in the file’s XMP metadata (the dc:subject field). You add it with any editor that supports IPTC before uploading the image. Amazon will show a badge on the listing, and reserves the right to remove unmarked images and throttle the listing.
  • The rule does not cover: real people, even retouched by a neural net, film and game characters, non-photorealistic characters and any shot without people.
  • The line is simple: “AI invented the person” — mark it. “A real model the AI touched up” — do not.
What it means for a seller: this is not an option but an obligation on every third-party seller. If you run lifestyle shots through AI photo studios, rebuild the pipeline: learn to write the metadata before upload and keep the two kinds of creative apart. And a separate risk: labelled AI content usually engages worse, so the badge can shave your conversion.

Amazon Ads: ten new AI features — you can now steer the model with your own audiences

Brand+ and Performance+ are the autopilot campaign types in Amazon DSP, where the algorithm decides who sees the ad and where. Amazon shipped ten updates to them at once, and the main one is Audience Signals: you hand the model your own audience data as a hint. There is no extra charge — the announcement says “no additional fees” outright.

  • Model upgrades: optimisation for brand outcomes, Prime Video signals plugged in, asynchronous remarketing in Performance+.
  • New inventory: audio ads for Brand+ and Performance+, rolling out across 16 locales.
What it means for a seller: the shift in rhetoric matters more than the features: it used to be a black box — “the AI will figure it out” — and now it is “AI steered by the advertiser”. You get a real lever: feed the model your own segments instead of handing over budget blind.

Manage Products has been rebuilt — with an AI assistant sitting inside it

Amazon quietly updated Manage Products in Seller Central, without a press release. The day used to look like this: a product falls out of search — one screen; fix the bullets — a second; check stock — a third. Now it is one page. Verbatim from the announcement: “Edit listings, fix suppressed ASINs, manage inventory and track product health all from one page”.

Two terms if you are new: suppressed ASIN is when the product exists in your account but a shopper cannot find it in search: Amazon has throttled the listing over a missing field, a short title, an unsuitable main image or the category. The nasty part is that sales drop to zero while the account looks fine, and you can spend a week wondering why it has gone quiet. Product health is the listing’s overall health: whether everything is filled in, whether there are content or compliance problems, whether a block is looming. Green means it works, red means fix it before you lose the traffic.
  • AI right on the working screen. Amazon’s wording: “Ask Seller Assistant directly in Manage Products to share insights into your business or take selected actions on your behalf”. So you do not leave for a separate chat — you ask on the page with your own products: “why is this ASIN not showing?”, “what is about to run out?”. And it performs some of the actions for you.
  • A configurable view. You can pick which columns to see and which to hide and save it as your own preset — the listing manager and the supply person get different screens instead of one 40-column sheet.
  • Manage Shipments and Manage FBA Inventory were updated too. Amazon stresses separately: “Your existing data and workflows remain unchanged” — nothing breaks, this is an interface rebuild.
What it means for a seller: this is the first time Amazon’s AI assistant has appeared not in a separate chat but at the point of decision — on the page where you edit products. The practical win: suppressed ASINs and product-health dips get caught sooner, which means fewer days with a product invisible in search. Soberly though: the assistant only performs “selected actions”, a limited set — this is not catalogue autopilot yet. And the trend is plain: Amazon is embedding AI straight into operational screens, gradually eating the tasks third-party tools were kept for.

Study: Amazon’s AI (Alexa for Shopping) does not look at search results

Marketplace Pulse ran about 2,000 queries and compared what Alexa for Shopping recommends with ordinary search results. The outcome: 63.9% of recommended products were outside the organic top 10, and 40.9% do not show in normal search at all. Only 14.3% of the recommendations were sponsored.

  • The AI picks the product from context and shopper intent, not from search position or ad bid.
What it means for a seller: a new visibility channel opens that you cannot simply buy with a bid or grind out organically. For the AI to recommend your product it needs rich context — detailed attributes and use cases, so it understands when your product is the right answer.

Amazon closed its AGI lab and stepped out of the race for a superbrain of its own

Amazon confirmed layoffs in its artificial general intelligence unit and closed the AGI Lab in San Francisco — the lab set up in December 2024 to build AGI and business agents. The company’s wording: “sharpening our focus on the initiatives that matter most to customers”. The unit’s leadership had already left earlier.

What it means for a seller: Amazon is stepping out of its own frontier-model race and shifting weight onto AWS infrastructure, its investment in Anthropic, and the applied AI a customer actually sees: Alexa for Shopping, Seller Assistant, the Nova models. The practical read: the stream of AI features in Seller Central will not slow down, but the brains under them will be less and less Amazon’s own.

Alibaba launched an agent that finds suppliers and haggles for you around the clock

Alibaba.com released the Accio Sourcing Toolkit. You describe what you need and the agent picks factories itself, writes to several at once, and negotiates price, lead times, minimum order quantity and shipping terms — around the clock, without you pinging anyone between negotiation rounds.

  • The agent runs several conversations in parallel, compares offers, cites competitors’ better terms inside the negotiation, and follows up with whoever went quiet.
  • A hard stop: the agent not close the deal, not confirm the order or not make the payment — the decision stays with you.
What it means for a seller: all week we talk about agents on the buyer’s side, and here AI arrives on the sourcing side — where an Amazon seller actually lives. The upside is obvious: night correspondence with factories across time zones and polling ten suppliers stop being manual work. The downside is just as obvious: on the other side of the table sits the same kind of agent, and “I never sleep and run 20 conversations” stops being your edge.

For the first time shoppers picked AI over the brand’s own site

Bloomreach (a personalisation platform for online stores) surveyed 4,040 adults in the US and the UK. 41.4% said they would rather buy through an AI tool, and only 38% directly on the brand’s site. A year ago it was exactly the other way round: 58.9% for the brand site against 41.1% for AI. A parallel CI&T study shows the same picture: 74% of Americans have already used an AI agent while shopping, and 90% have used one or are willing to try.

  • 75.4% have already used AI for purchase decisions, and 80.4% said the experience met or beat their expectations.
  • 37.5% started spending more, 39.5% buying more often.
  • Top use cases per CI&T: comparing brands (55%), finding the lowest price (55%), finding where to buy (49%).
What it means for a seller: this is the first measurement where an AI assistant overtook the brand’s own site as the preferred place to buy. The familiar funnel “found → researched → bought” flips into “researched → found → bought”. The fight for traffic moves from SEO and PPC to visibility inside ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini — and a listing now has to be optimised for a machine that reads attributes and price, not only for a human looking at a picture.

Makers are fleeing Etsy over a flood of AI listings — an AI-banning rival opens on August 1

Handmade sellers complain that cheaper AI content ranks above their work in Etsy search. An artist from Boulder describes a 30% drop in sales; a British illustrator, minus 98% over a year. Etsy has allowed AI art since 2024 provided the seller discloses it, but a company VP admitted that “enforcement is a tricky thing”.

  • The rival Fybe — a marketplace that bans AI content and dropshipping outright and moderates by hand — opens seller registration on August 1.
What it means for a seller: the second signal this week (after Amazon’s rule) that AI disclosure is becoming a big platform topic. And a clear case of cheap AI content reshaping a marketplace’s search results — with a niche of “no AI” platforms appearing in response. What to do

Three actions for this week

1
Check your photos for AI people

The most urgent one. If your creatives contain people generated by a neural net, write contains-synthetic-performer into the metadata before uploading. Otherwise Amazon may pull the image and throttle the listing.

2
Enrich your attributes for AI search

Shoppers picked AI over the brand site for the first time, and Amazon’s AI recommends past the top 10 of search. Spell out which jobs and situations your product is the right answer to. This channel cannot be bought with a bid.
